Expanded City Stays Anchor New River Program
The river-cruise offshoot of Celebrity Cruises will debut on Europe’s rivers in 2027 with two new ships and a program of seven-night itineraries on the Rhine and Danube. As details continue to emerge, the company is now spotlighting extended stays that wrap around those sailings, giving guests more time in marquee cities such as Prague, Budapest and Amsterdam as part of a broader land-and-river experience.
Early information from the line indicates that the city stays are being positioned as integral to the product rather than optional add-ons. Guests booking select Rhine itineraries between Basel and Amsterdam, and Danube sailings linking Germany, Austria and Hungary, will be able to add curated packages that include guided touring plus time to explore independently before joining or after leaving their ship.
Celebrity River Cruises has emphasized that these extensions are meant to mirror the brand’s ocean-cruise land programs, but scaled to the more intimate setting of river travel. The new offerings are expected to roll out for booking in phases beginning in 2026, in advance of the 2027 inaugural season.
Travel advisors say the move brings Celebrity into closer competition with established European river operators that have long combined multi-country cruising with city stays at either end. For Celebrity, the difference lies in tying those stays specifically to key embarkation and disembarkation hubs, with Prague, Budapest and Amsterdam highlighted as signature gateways.
Prague Packages Bring Old Town and Castle District into Focus
On the Prague side, Celebrity is centering its packages around the Czech capital’s historic core, leveraging the city’s role as a traditional start or end point for Danube itineraries. Guests will typically travel between Prague and their Danube embarkation port in Germany by coach or rail, with two or more nights in the city built in on either side of the cruise.
The planned experiences are expected to include guided walks through the Old Town and across Charles Bridge, plus time in the castle district overlooking the Vltava River. Evenings are being framed as largely unstructured, allowing travelers to explore restaurants, riverside walks and local beer halls at their own pace while still having access to Celebrity’s destination experts for recommendations.
The brand is also signaling a focus on seamless logistics for Prague stays, with transfers between hotels and river ports bundled into the package. That approach is aimed at first-time river cruisers who may be comfortable with Celebrity’s ocean product but less familiar with navigating Europe’s interior by train or highway coach.
By formalizing Prague as a key gateway, Celebrity is tapping into a longstanding pattern on Europe’s river network, where many Danube journeys are marketed in combination with the Czech capital even though it does not sit directly on the river itself.
Budapest Overnights Highlight Danube Drama and Nightlife
On the Danube proper, Budapest is emerging as one of the central pillars of Celebrity River Cruises’ deployment. The Hungarian capital appears as both a turnaround port and an extended stop on several upper Danube itineraries, with overnight stays scheduled to allow guests to see the city by day and after dark.
The line is underscoring the riverfront location of its berths, with ships docking close to landmark views of the Parliament building, Buda Castle and the city’s series of bridges. That proximity allows guests to step on and off throughout the day for guided tours, thermal-bath visits or independent exploration, then return in the evening for illuminated river panoramas.
Budapest extensions also tie into seasonal offerings. For late autumn and early winter sailings, Celebrity is featuring Christmas market programs that include time ashore to browse festive stalls on both the Buda and Pest sides of the river, in combination with onboard holiday activities. In shoulder seasons, the focus shifts to architectural and culinary touring, supported by local guides and wine tastings.
Because many of the company’s upper Danube itineraries link Budapest with ports in Germany and Austria, the overnight stays there serve as a natural pivot point between the Central European interior and the larger multi-country journey.
Amsterdam Emerges as the Rhine Gateway for 2027–2028
On the Rhine, Amsterdam is playing a similar role as a bookend city for Celebrity River Cruises’ new itineraries. The Dutch capital anchors a series of seven-night Rhine journeys that run between Amsterdam and Basel, with the river ships tracing a route through castle-dotted wine country and medieval towns in Germany and France.
Celebrity’s Amsterdam packages are expected to combine classic canal and museum touring with neighborhood-focused walks that showcase the city’s contemporary culture. The line is pitching these stays as an opportunity to settle into the time zone before boarding, or to extend a holiday with extra days in the Netherlands at the end of a cruise.
Tulip season is a particular focus for the brand, with spring departures marketed around access to the region’s famed flower fields and gardens. Guests staying in Amsterdam before or after a sailing will have additional options to visit countryside sites, while still returning to a centrally located hotel in the city.
As with Prague and Budapest, Amsterdam packages will be arranged and managed by Celebrity, including transfers to and from the river vessel. That bundled approach is aimed at simplifying planning for international guests flying into the gateway from North America and beyond.
Competitive Context in a Crowded European River Market
Celebrity’s emphasis on Prague, Budapest and Amsterdam comes at a time of intense competition on Europe’s rivers, where established players and new entrants are expanding fleets and itineraries. Traditional river brands have long paired city stays with cruising, particularly in these same hubs, which function as both tourist magnets and practical transport nodes.
By leaning on city extensions from the outset, Celebrity River Cruises is signaling that it intends to compete on more than onboard design and inclusions. The company has already outlined plans to grow beyond its initial two-ship deployment and expand to additional vessels and routes toward the end of the decade, suggesting that the Prague, Budapest and Amsterdam offerings are likely to be a template for future gateway cities.
Industry observers note that Celebrity’s existing customer base on ocean itineraries includes many travelers who have either taken or considered river cruises. For those guests, familiarity with names like Budapest and Amsterdam may help bridge the gap between deep-water and river holidays, especially when land stays are framed as an easy extension of the journey rather than a separate trip to arrange.
With bookings for 2027 river sailings already drawing strong interest and land packages scheduled to open for sale from 2026, Prague, Budapest and Amsterdam are set to play an outsized role in how Celebrity introduces its version of river cruising to the market.
