More news on this day
Central Railway has announced eighteen Holi special trains for March 2026, adding temporary services linking Mumbai, Pune, Madgaon, Hatia and Danapur to manage the heavy festival rush on key long-distance corridors.

Extra Festival Capacity on Western and Eastern Corridors
The additional Holi specials have been scheduled across two of Central Railway’s busiest seasonal flows: Mumbai and Pune to eastern India, and Mumbai to Goa along the Konkan coast. The decision follows consistent reports of wait-listed passengers in the weeks leading up to the March Holi holidays and is intended to spread demand away from regularly scheduled trains.
According to recent operational notices and reservation data for March 2026, Central Railway will field a total of 18 special services on three core routes. These include pairs between Mumbai and Madgaon, Mumbai and Hatia, and Pune and Danapur, with services operating on selected days between late February and mid March to coincide with peak outbound and return travel.
Railway officials have reiterated that the Holi specials are fully reserved express or AC express trains, operated with special fare structures. While priced higher than regular mail and express services, they are designed to absorb last-minute demand that would otherwise overflow onto crowded general coaches or informal transport alternatives.
The move aligns with the national railway network’s wider Holi strategy, which has seen hundreds of festival specials announced across zones to connect major metros with Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and the Konkan belt. For Central Railway, the focus this season is squarely on clearing the rush from Mumbai and Pune, two of India’s largest sources of seasonal migrant and leisure travel.
Mumbai to Madgaon: Added Holidays on the Konkan Route
For travellers heading from Mumbai to the beaches of Goa and hometowns along the Konkan, Central Railway has scheduled multiple AC and mixed-class specials between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Madgaon. The services are timed around the key Holi travel window in early March, complementing the regular Mandovi, Konkan Kanya and other long-distance trains on the coastal line.
Reservation charts indicate that an AC special between Mumbai CSMT and Madgaon is set to run on 3 March and 6 March, with departures from Mumbai shortly after midnight and arrivals in Goa by afternoon. The corresponding return services from Madgaon back to CSMT are slated for the same dates, leaving Madgaon in the late afternoon and reaching Mumbai in the early hours of the following day. These trains are composed entirely of AC three-tier economy coaches, catering to passengers seeking a reserved and relatively comfortable overnight journey.
In addition, a Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to Madgaon Holi special is operating around the core festival period, with an evening departure from LTT and a midday arrival in Madgaon the following day. Return legs from Madgaon to LTT depart in the early evening and arrive in Mumbai the next morning. These services include sleeper class and AC accommodations, offering a broader choice of price points for families and groups travelling home for the holidays.
Konkan-bound passengers have been advised to secure reservations as early as possible, as previous Holi seasons have seen coastal trains sell out days in advance. With the added specials, Central Railway expects to ease congestion and reduce the number of travellers resorting to long road journeys on the parallel highway.
Mumbai–Hatia Holi Specials to Serve Jharkhand-Bound Passengers
To cater to the strong seasonal demand from migrants and students travelling from Mumbai to Jharkhand, a pair of special fare Holi trains has been introduced between Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Hatia, near Ranchi. These services are scheduled to operate on 4 March and 11 March, departing LTT in the early morning and covering more than 1,600 kilometres to Hatia over roughly 37 hours.
The LTT–Hatia Holi specials offer a mix of sleeper, AC three-tier, AC two-tier and three-tier economy coaches, reflecting the varied budgets of long-distance passengers originating in Mumbai’s extended metropolitan region. The eastbound trains are matched by corresponding return services from Hatia, allowing passengers to plan both outbound and return legs around Holi celebrations in Jharkhand.
Given the duration of the journey and the cross-country route via multiple states, railway planners have positioned these services to depart well before the festival date and return soon after. This spacing aims to decongest both ends of the corridor while also protecting punctuality, as heavily loaded festival trains are more susceptible to delays.
Central Railway has highlighted that regular long-distance trains on the Mumbai–Jharkhand axis were already showing high booking levels for early March. The Holi specials are intended as relief trains, particularly for passengers who were wait-listed on standard services but still prefer rail over more expensive air travel.
Pune–Danapur Route Strengthened for Bihar Holiday Rush
Pune, another major hub for students and migrant workers from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, will see multiple Holi specials to Danapur near Patna. Central Railway has notified special fare express services operating between late February and mid March, reinforcing regular connectivity on this long corridor.
On the Pune–Danapur leg, a special train is scheduled with departures from Pune in the evening, reaching Danapur in the morning after a journey of more than 36 hours. The return Danapur–Pune services are timed to depart in the forenoon and arrive in Pune in the evening two days later, giving travellers ample flexibility in choosing travel dates around celebrations back home.
Coach compositions on the Pune–Danapur Holi specials include second sitting, sleeper, AC three-tier, AC two-tier and in some cases AC first class, reflecting the route’s mix of budget-conscious travellers and families willing to pay more for privacy and comfort. Special fares apply, but the added supply of berths is expected to moderate last-minute price spikes on alternative modes such as flights via Mumbai or Delhi.
Officials and travel agents in Pune note that migrant demand to Bihar typically spikes sharply in the week before Holi, with many passengers preferring direct trains that avoid multiple changes. The Holi specials are therefore seen as crucial in reducing overcrowding on regular long-distance services and ensuring safer, more orderly boarding at Pune Junction.
Bookings Open with Digital and Counter Options
Advance reservations for the Holi specials have already opened for several train numbers, particularly on the Mumbai–Madgaon and Pune–Danapur routes, while bookings for some services, such as the LTT–Hatia specials, are being released in stages in early March. Passengers can book through the standard online reservation system, authorised mobile apps and all computerised reservation counters across the Central Railway network.
Railway authorities are urging travellers to verify exact departure dates, timings, halts and coach compositions at the time of booking, as festival specials are subject to operational adjustments. Real-time information is being pushed through official enquiry portals and mobile applications so that passengers can monitor changes and plan their station arrivals accordingly.
In addition to reserved services, Central Railway is also encouraging the use of mobile ticketing for unreserved suburban and short-distance travel around Mumbai and Pune during the Holi period. By diverting local flows to digital channels and dedicated unreserved systems, the zone hopes to keep station queues manageable while long-distance passengers board their festival specials.
While the eighteen Holi specials represent a significant short-term boost in capacity, officials have indicated that demand is likely to remain strong through the holiday period. Travellers are therefore being advised to complete bookings promptly, arrive at stations well ahead of departure times, and follow on-board safety and luggage norms to help ensure a smoother festival travel experience across Central Railway’s network.
