The Maldives is like no other place on earth for romance; even after visiting over 40 countries, we were convinced nothing compares to waking up to pastel-pink sunrises over crystal-clear water and falling asleep under a blanket of stars.
Our honeymoon here was not just a vacation, it was a storybook beginning to married life, filled with luxury, adventure, and intimate moments we’ll cherish forever.
Planning Your Worry-Free Honeymoon
Planning a trip to the Maldives in summer turned out to be easier and more rewarding than we expected. We discovered that, despite the term "rainy season," a Maldives summer offers plenty of sunshine and warmth.
Occasional short showers may sprinkle a few afternoons or evenings each week, but they pass quickly and hardly dampen the mood. In fact, we rarely heard any travelers complain about summer weather – balmy 30°C (86°F) days and sea breezes were the norm for us.
An added perk: summer is off-peak, meaning we enjoyed attractive pricing and deals unavailable in the crowded winter months. Resorts often offer discounted rates and special packages in summer, so you can indulge in luxury for less while still having a magical experience.
Step 1: Choose the Perfect Dates
Pick dates that work for both of you and consider the Maldives’ summer season (May–October). We went in July, which brought fewer tourists and a sense of tranquility.
Yes, it was the monsoon season, but this just meant a few dramatic tropical downpours that made the island greenery even more lush. We planned around the typical pattern – sunny mornings and early afternoons, with a chance of showers late in the day.
This timing worked out perfectly for scheduling activities when skies were clear and cozying up together if a rainstorm swept through in the evening. If you’re concerned about marine life: whale sharks can be spotted year-round in the South Ari Atoll, so summer is still prime time to swim with these gentle giants.
Manta rays tend to be more abundant in other atolls during summer, but South Ari’s star attraction – the whale sharks – are present no matter when you visit.
Step 2: Book International Flights Early
Next, secure your flights to Velana International Airport (Malé). We started monitoring fares a few months in advance and pounced on a good deal. Many major airlines fly to Malé via hubs like Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, or Singapore.
Because seaplanes to the resort operate only during daylight (generally 6:00 am to 3:30 pm), aim to land by mid-afternoon at the latest. We chose an arrival around noon to comfortably make our connection.
If you have to arrive late at night, consider spending that night in Malé or Hulhumalé, then taking the first seaplane out in the morning for a fresh start to your island adventure. We found peace of mind by padding our schedule this way – no rushed connections, just smooth sailing (or flying) into honeymoon mode.
Step 3: Arrange Resort Transfers
Conrad Maldives is located in the South Ari Atoll, accessible by a scenic 30-minute seaplane flight from Malé. The resort will handle booking this transfer for you – we simply emailed our flight details to the Conrad reservations team and they scheduled everything.
Upon landing in Malé, a friendly Conrad representative met us at arrivals to guide us. We checked in at the dedicated Conrad counter and our luggage was tagged through to the island.
After a short van ride, we arrived at the resort’s private seaplane lounge, an air-conditioned haven with refreshments and even a spa room for a quick shoulder massage. All we had to do was relax and enjoy the anticipation while watching seaplanes come and go. Soon, our flight was ready and we boarded a Twin Otter seaplane – a first for both of us.
The thrill of taking off from water and the bird’s-eye views of tiny emerald islands in a sea of blues set the tone for our adventure. Transfer costs were billed with our stay (around US$680 per adult round-trip for the seaplane), but we felt it was worth every penny for such a unique arrival.
Tip: The resort’s honeymoon package gave us 30% off these transfer fees, a welcome discount!
If seaplanes aren’t available or you prefer alternatives, Conrad can arrange a domestic flight to a nearby island plus a speedboat, but this is usually only needed if you arrive after seaplane hours or in unusual circumstances. For most honeymooners, the seaplane is part of the Maldivian fairy tale, so embrace it.
Choosing Your Dream Villa
Choosing our accommodation at Conrad Rangali Island was one of the most exciting parts of planning. The resort spans two private islands – one is family-friendly and the other is an adults-only haven geared toward couples and honeymooners.
We knew we wanted the latter for a quieter, romantic atmosphere. There are several villa types to fit different budgets and dreams, each offering a blend of barefoot luxury and privacy.
- Beach Villas: Nestled amid tropical foliage along pristine beaches, these villas give you your own stretch of sand. We spent our first night in a Beach Villa and loved stepping straight out to the shore. It felt like a secluded tropical bungalow, complete with an outdoor garden shower so we could rinse off under the palm trees. Beach villas are slightly more affordable than the overwater options, so they’re great if you want to balance indulgence and cost. Plus, waking up to sunrise on the beach, with hermit crabs scuttling by, had its own charm.
- Overwater Villas: For the quintessential Maldives experience, you’ll likely want to try a water villa on stilts. We moved to an overwater villa for the remainder of our stay and it was pure magic. Sitting on the adults-only Rangali Island, our water villa had been recently refurbished – in 2022 Conrad refreshed 50 of these overwater retreats with stylish new interiors and indoor-outdoor living spaces. The result? A chic, modern hideaway with hardwood floors, a huge bed facing the ocean, and glass panels in the floor to watch reef fish flit below. We had an uninterrupted view of the Indian Ocean and direct ladder access into the lagoon right from our deck. Some evenings we’d sit in our private plunge pool (we splurged on a Premier Water Villa with Pool) sipping champagne as the sun set in a blaze of orange. It was intimate and otherworldly – just us, the gentle lapping of waves, and the sky painting reflections on the water. One thing we appreciated was the adult-only policy on this island: no children under 16 are allowed in the overwater villas, ensuring a peaceful environment for couples.
- The Muraka – Underwater Villa: If you really want to take it over the top (and your budget allows), The MURAKA is Conrad’s showstopper – a unique two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged 16 feet below sea level. It’s essentially a private mini-hotel: above water there are spacious living areas, two additional bedrooms, an infinity pool on the deck, and 24-hour butler service. But the crown jewel lies beneath the waves – a glass-domed undersea suite where you can literally sleep alongside fish and manta rays gliding past your bed. We toured The Muraka out of curiosity (the resort can arrange viewings if it’s unoccupied) and were blown away by the engineering and the 180° panoramic underwater views. It felt like being in a private aquarium. For most honeymooners, The Muraka is an aspirational splurge (nightly rates can start around $10,000+), but knowing it’s there is inspiring. Even if you don’t stay in it, just hearing about it added an extra wow factor to our trip – like being at a resort that is literally one-of-a-kind in the world.
Villa Selection Tips: Think about your priorities – sunset views or sunrise? Private pool or easy beach access?
Every villa, whether beach or water, comes with luxury amenities, indoor-outdoor bathrooms, and that signature Maldivian laid-back elegance. We recommend splitting your stay between a beach villa and an overwater villa if you have enough nights; it’s like getting two honeymoon experiences in one.
And if you’re celebrating something special (well, your honeymoon itself is special!), mention it to the resort in advance. Conrad went above and beyond for us – from a bottle of chilled champagne and chocolates in our villa on arrival, to a beautiful bed decoration with tropical flowers one evening.
These touches made us feel truly celebrated. Also, if you’re part of Hilton Honors or booked a honeymoon package, you might receive extra perks or upgrades on arrival, so it never hurts to politely inquire.
Restaurants & Romantic Meals
One of the joys of our stay was the phenomenal dining options at Conrad Rangali. Despite being on a remote island, we felt like we took a culinary tour around the world – each restaurant had its own vibe and specialty, and every meal became an experience in itself.
Here are some of the dining highlights we loved (and recommend booking ahead, especially for the specialty venues):
Ithaa Undersea Restaurant
This is Conrad’s iconic showstopper – the world’s first undersea restaurant, set five meters beneath the ocean surface. We knew dining here would be a honeymoon must-do, and it didn’t disappoint.
One evening we descended the spiral staircase into Ithaa’s glass archway and literally had dinner in an aquarium. The entire ceiling and walls are a clear acrylic dome, so as we savored a decadent tasting menu, we watched reef sharks, stingrays, and vibrant fish swim overhead and around us.
It was like being inside a marine ballet – utterly mesmerizing and surreal. The restaurant only seats 14 guests, which made it very intimate. We timed our reservation for sunset to see the light change under water; as dusk fell, the ocean took on deep blue hues and marine life became silhouettes against the reef.
Photo opportunities here are endless – we definitely had fun snapping pictures of ourselves “under the sea,” which our friends back home could hardly believe were real! The cuisine itself was top-notch (think Maldivian lobster with champagne beurre blanc, truffle-infused tenderloin, etc.), presented as a multi-course tasting menu.
Be prepared: Ithaa is a splurge (dinner can be several hundred dollars per person), but for us it was a once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list dining experience that absolutely made our honeymoon.
Helpful hint: If the full dinner is out of budget, Ithaa offers a mid-day champagne and canapés “visiting hour” where you can experience the space and have a drink for a smaller fee. We met another couple who did that and loved it. In fact, our honeymoon package included a complimentary Ithaa visit with canapés, which was a great perk.
Sunset Grill
True to its name, this open-air grill is perched over water and is best experienced at sunset. One night we booked a table here and it felt like a classic tropical romance scene.
We dined on freshly caught seafood – the Maldivian lobster and reef fish were outstanding – while the sky turned tangerine orange all around us. The restaurant is partially thatched-roof, partially under the stars, giving it a rustic-elegant island feel.
After the undersea adventure at Ithaa, Sunset Grill was our pick for a more laid-back yet still luxurious dinner where we could hear the gentle waves below our table. It was the perfect place to linger over a bottle of wine and toast to our day’s adventures.
Mandhoo Restaurant
Set on stilts over the lagoon, Mandhoo is a wellness-themed restaurant that quickly became our favorite lunch spot. The menu focuses on organic, healthy dishes – but they’re so flavorful you’d never think it’s “spa cuisine.”
We enjoyed light, zesty meals like watermelon feta salads, grilled seafood with tropical salsa, and antioxidant-rich desserts.
The breezy open-air pavilion and views of baby sharks and fish in the clear water below made every meal here a tranquil treat. The staff told us Mandhoo’s concept is inspired by the five elements (air, water, fire, earth, plant) to create dishes that balance wellness, which we found really cool.
We also had a romantic 3-course dinner at Mandhoo included in our honeymoon package – that night, they reserved us a special table by the water’s edge and we felt like we had the restaurant almost to ourselves.
Koko Grill
For a change of pace, we tried Koko Grill on another evening – an intimate Japanese teppanyaki experience under the stars. This is an open-air restaurant literally on the beach, with only about 8 seats at a chef’s counter.
We sat up front as the chef prepared an 8-course meal, slicing and sizzling seafood and Wagyu beef on the hot grill. The sound of the ocean was in the background and we could look up to see a sky full of stars while enjoying sake and sushi.
It was dinner and entertainment in one: we chatted with the chef and the other couples, making it a social experience, yet it still felt very private and romantic for us side-by-side.
Koko Grill’s setting – ocean on one side, palm trees on the other – made us appreciate how diverse the dining at Conrad is (one night underwater, another night under the open sky!). Reservations are a must here due to limited seating.
Vilu Restaurant & Bar
Vilu became our go-to for lazy breakfasts with a view. Located on the edge of the lagoon, this open-air restaurant serves an à la carte and buffet breakfast for Rangali Island guests (and also fine dining in the evening).
Each morning we sat with our feet in the sand, sipping freshly squeezed juices and Maldivian coconut pancakes, watching baby reef sharks swim in the shallows. We also had one lovely dinner at Vilu; they specialize in Mediterranean-Asian fusion cuisine and have an extensive wine selection.
It’s an especially great spot for a sunset dinner – the western-facing view means you can dine while the sky is ablaze, similar to Sunset Grill but with a menu that includes pastas, curries, and gourmet twists on local ingredients. The atmosphere at Vilu is a bit more casual-elegant (no need to dress to the nines, though we liked dressing up a little for fun).
Atoll Market
This is the buffet restaurant and the social heart of the resort, situated on the family island. It offers a different theme each night (Italian, Asian, Seafood BBQ, Maldivian, etc.) across various cooking stations.
We went there for dinner on our first night (too tired from travel for a long à la carte meal) and it was just what we needed – a relaxed vibe where you can try a bit of everything. Picture lamp-lit sand floors, live cooking stations, and a huge variety from sushi to wood-fired pizza to curries.
The quality was excellent for a buffet. We also enjoyed a beachfront dinner event here called Grand Maldivian Night – imagine a cultural evening with traditional Boduberu drummers and dancers, local dishes like coconut milk curries and grilled reef fish, all under the stars.
It was festive and gave us a peek into Maldivian culture, which we really appreciated amid the international cuisine offerings.
And if you’re in the mood for something extra special, private dining can be arranged virtually anywhere. Conrad’s team offered to set up a candlelit dinner on the beach for us – just the two of us with a personal chef and server under a canopy of stars.
We saved this for our final night, and it was absolutely the grand finale we hoped for (more on that later in the itinerary section!). There’s also a Cheese & Wine Bar on the island for pairing nights, and an underground Wine Cellar with gourmet wine dinners if you’re oenophiles.
Honestly, a week wasn’t enough to experience every venue, but each meal we did have was memorable in its own way. The key is to plan ahead: make reservations for Ithaa, Koko, and any special dinners as early as possible (even before you arrive, via email) so you don’t miss out.
Experiences for Two
We wanted a honeymoon that balanced relaxation and adventure, and Conrad Rangali Island delivered plenty of both. Each day we found new experiences – some thrilling, some blissfully lazy – and the best part was that the resort staff handled all the details, making it completely worry-free for us.
Here are some of the top activities and experiences we enjoyed (or saw others enjoying) during our stay:
Snorkeling the House Reef
The moment we saw the clear water, we couldn’t wait to snorkel. Conrad has a pretty house reef accessible right from the beach and villas, which meant we could snorkel whenever the fancy struck.
We’d grab our fins and mask (the resort provides snorkeling gear for guests) and wade in to find a world of colorful fish just meters from shore.
We regularly saw clownfish in anemones, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and even a sea turtle one afternoon – as if checking in on us! One highlight was a guided snorkeling safari included in our honeymoon package.
A marine biologist led us along the reef drop-off, pointing out hidden creatures like camouflaged octopus and lionfish. It was both fun and educational.
For confident swimmers, night snorkeling is also offered – we tried it and found the reef transforms after dark, with corals blooming and nocturnal critters coming alive (eels, lobsters, baby reef sharks – such a rush!).
The dive center offers a “Discover Snorkeling” tour for beginners and even scooter-snorkeling for those who want a little propulsion. Whether day or night, don’t miss exploring the underwater wonders – the South Ari Atoll is known for rich marine life.
Scuba Diving & Undersea Encounters
We’re both open-water certified divers, so we had to take advantage of the Ocean Dive Center on site. The diving around Rangali Island is phenomenal.
One morning we joined an excursion to a nearby dive site and swam alongside a whale shark – yes, a whale shark! It was a juvenile (about 5 meters long) and utterly gentle, cruising slowly so we could keep pace with minimal effort.
South Ari Atoll is one of the only places on Earth where whale sharks can be seen year-round, and encountering one in the wild was a humbling, exhilarating experience.
We also did a manta ray dive at a cleaning station (peak manta season here is generally January–April, but we got lucky with one graceful manta gliding by in July). The dive center offers everything from beginner courses to advanced dives. Even if you’re not certified, you can do a resort course or a guided discovery dive in shallow water.
The instructors were professional and safety-focused, so we felt completely at ease. For a romantic twist, consider a Private diving trip – they can arrange a boat just for the two of you with a guide, which a couple we met did for their honeymoon.
And for true enthusiasts, Conrad now has a new dive center facility right on the water’s edge (opened after the 2022 renovation for easier access). Whether you dive by day or even try a night dive (seeing bioluminescent plankton and the “reef at night” is unforgettable), the underwater world here will likely be the highlight of your trip.
Overwater Spa & Wellness
Honeymoon and spa days go hand-in-hand. The resort has two spas – one amidst a garden on the main island and one Overwater Spa on Rangali Island, which was recently revamped with new facilities.
We booked a couple’s massage at the Overwater Spa, timed for late afternoon after a day in the sun. This spa is the stuff of fantasy: treatment rooms sit on stilts over the lagoon with glass floor panels. So as we got our massages, we could glance below and literally see fish swimming under us!
The therapists were incredibly skilled, working out all the travel knots we didn’t even know we had. The signature 60-minute couples massage included in our package was heavenly – aromatic oils, the sound of the waves below, and synchronized treatment that left us both in a state of pure relaxation.
Post-massage, they served us ginger tea on the deck while we watched a pastel sunset. In addition to massages, they offer facials, body wraps, and even wellness activities like sunrise yoga sessions (we did one together on the spa deck one morning – a gentle stretch while the world woke up around us, it was beautiful).
If spa treatments aren’t in your budget daily, no worries – the spa area has a serenity deck and also a Yoga Pavilion where complimentary group yoga is offered some mornings. Taking time to slow down and focus on wellness together was a wonderful balance to our adventurous days.
Private Beach Dinner
To dial up the romance, consider arranging at least one private dining experience. We opted for a private candlelit dinner on the beach for our second night. With the help of the resort’s event coordinator, I secretly planned it as a surprise for my spouse.
They set up a gorgeous table for two right on a quiet stretch of sand, flanked by flaming torches. As the sky darkened, we dined by candlelight with only the sound of gentle surf. A personal chef grilled our favorite dishes (they asked for our preferences ahead of time) and a butler quietly served each course. It was as if we had the whole island to ourselves for that evening.
Many honeymooners also try a sandbank picnic – Conrad can whisk you by boat to a tiny uninhabited sandbank nearby, where you’re left alone with a picnic basket, umbrella, and champagne for a few hours.
We did a midday sandbank trip and it felt like we were castaways in the best way: just us on a strip of white sand in the middle of infinite blue. We snorkeled around the sandbank, then enjoyed fresh fruit and sandwiches with 360° ocean views. Definitely Instagram-worthy and intimacy to the max!
Sunset Cruise & Dolphin Watching
One activity that came included for us (through our package) was a Sunset Dolphin Cruise. As the golden hour approached, we joined a small group on a traditional Maldivian dhoni (wooden boat).
Cruising into the open sea with the warm wind in our hair and a glass of bubbly in hand was already romantic – and then we met the dolphins. A pod of spinner dolphins decided to race alongside our boat, leaping and twirling out of the water playfully. We sat at the bow, my head on his shoulder, watching these wild dolphins against the backdrop of an epic sunset.
It felt like a scene from a movie. The crew was knowledgeable, explaining dolphin behavior and giving us ample time to take photos (though we mostly just savored the moment).
By the time we returned to the resort, the sky was full of stars. We highly recommend this experience – it combines natural beauty, a bit of adventure, and relaxed romance. Plus, the Maldives sunsets are legendary, and seeing one from a boat with nothing blocking the horizon is unforgettable.
Cultural Experiences
While the Maldives is mostly about sun and sea, we wanted to connect with the local culture too. The resort offers a few ways to do that. We attended a Maldivian cooking class one afternoon, where a chef taught us how to make mas huni (a traditional Maldivian tuna coconut breakfast dish) and garudhiya (fragrant fish soup).
We had fun donning aprons and getting hands-on, and we definitely plan to recreate those recipes at home to bring a taste of Maldives into our kitchen. There’s also an art studio (Kula Fenda Art Studio) on site where local artists sometimes hold workshops – painting with natural dyes and learning about Maldivian arts was a nice change of pace when we wanted a break from the sun.
And as mentioned, don’t miss the cultural night when the resort brings in Boduberu drummers; hearing the rhythmic beats and watching the performers by lantern light gave us goosebumps – it was soulful and invigorating at the same time.
If you have time, you can also arrange an excursion to a nearby local island to see Maldivian village life (we didn’t fit this in, but a couple we met said it was eye-opening and worth doing to appreciate life beyond the resorts).
Water Sports & Adventures
For the active honeymooners, Conrad has a Watersports Center loaded with toys. We took a tandem kayak out one morning and paddled around the lagoon, peering through the glassy water at corals below.
Stand-up paddleboarding was another favorite – it’s a serene workout and gave us goofy memories of trying (and sometimes failing) to balance together. Non-motorized water sports like kayak, paddleboard, and windsurfing were complimentary for us, so we took advantage. For adrenaline rushes, there’s jet skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, and even sea-bob rides (imagine a handheld underwater scooter that lets you dart around like a dolphin).
We tried the Jet Ski Safari where a guide led us around the atoll – speeding over turquoise flats and stopping at remote reefs to snorkel was a thrilling way to explore further from the resort.
The water sports team even set up a fun tubing ride where we laughed ourselves silly bouncing over waves on an inflatable. Whether you’re a novice or experienced, the instructors tailor things to your level. And if you prefer your adventures motor-free, just swimming in the warm lagoon together at sunset or floating in your villa’s private pool can be just as special.
The key is: do as much or as little as you like. This is your time, and some days our favorite “activity” was simply lying side by side on a hammock, reading or napping as the ocean breeze kept us cool.
Throughout all these experiences, the resort’s staff made everything effortless. We’d express a passing interest in something, and they’d have it arranged by the next day. Their motto seemed to be “nothing is too much trouble”, and truly, we felt that warm hospitality at every turn.
From our villa host who appeared like a magician whenever we needed a buggy ride or dinner reservation, to the dive guides and spa therapists, everyone was genuinely friendly and took pride in making guests happy.
That level of service took any remaining stress out of our trip – we could fully immerse in each other’s company and the surroundings, knowing the details were handled.
Budgeting Tips
The Maldives has a reputation for being expensive, but with some smart planning we managed to indulge in luxury without financial stress. Here are our budgeting tips to keep your Conrad Maldives honeymoon worry-free in terms of costs:
Travel in Off-Peak Season
We cannot overstate how much value we got by going in summer (off-peak). Our villa rate was significantly lower than the winter high season, and the resort often had special offers like a free night or meal plan upgrade in summer.
This meant we could afford a longer stay and a better villa category. As a bonus, the resort was only moderately occupied, so it felt even more exclusive.
According to travel experts, the Maldives offers exceptional bang for your buck in summer with discounted rates and added amenities, and we certainly found that to be true.
Honeymoon Packages & Deals
Conrad Maldives offers a Honeymoon Package (Romantic Escapes) that we took full advantage of.
It required a 4-night minimum stay, which we already planned, and included a host of extras that saved money overall. For example, we received 30% off our seaplane transfers, daily breakfast for two, a complimentary 60-minute couples massage, a romantic three-course dinner at Mandhoo, sunset canapés at Ithaa, a bottle of champagne and chocolates in-villa, a couples photoshoot, and more.
We added up the value of those inclusions and it was substantial – easily a few thousand dollars’ worth if purchased separately. If a package like this is available, go for it! Just remember you may need to show a marriage certificate at check-in (honeymoon offers usually apply within 12 months of your wedding).
Also, check Conrad’s official Special Offers page or Hilton Honors deals before booking; sometimes they have early-bird rates, extended stay discounts, or bonus Hilton points promotions that can make a difference.
Meal Plans vs. À La Carte
Food at a resort of this caliber is pricey (entrees can be $30–$80 and buffet dinner for two easily $200+ with drinks). To manage costs, consider the dining plan options.
We chose to go with Breakfast included (the lavish breakfast buffet at Atoll Market was included in our package, and we filled up each morning). For lunch and dinner, we mostly ordered à la carte so we had flexibility – some days we were happy with light snacks or shared dishes after a big breakfast.
However, if you know you want a full meal for dinner each night and don’t want to worry about prices, look into Half Board or Full Board plans. Half Board (usually breakfast and dinner included) can be good value if you like multi-course dinners; Full Board (three meals) is more food than we could personally handle, but might work for others.
Also, take advantage of any happy hour deals at bars for cheaper cocktails, and the mini-bar in the room can be skipped by bringing a few of your own snacks or duty-free wine for private moments.
We often grabbed extra fruit and pastries at breakfast to nibble on later (shh, our little secret!). The resort’s free coffee/tea in room and bottled water refreshed daily also helped avoid extra charges.
Plan and Prioritize Activities
It’s easy to get wide-eyed at all the activities and sign up for everything, but costs can add up fast. We sat down on our first day and made a “must-do” list vs. “nice-to-do” list. Our must-dos were Ithaa dinner, the couples massage, and the whale shark excursion – big ticket items we budgeted for.
Then we mixed in complimentary or lower-cost activities around them. For instance, the guided snorkel tour, non-motorized water sports, and group yoga were free.
The sunset cruise was included in our offer. We did one splurge excursion (jet ski safari) but skipped another (there was a $500 private island dinner we passed on, since we already had a beach dinner in our package). By prioritizing, we never felt we missed out – we chose the experiences most meaningful to us and spaced them out.
It’s also worth seeing if the resort offers any credits or discounts: some packages give a resort credit to use on dining or spa. We had a $100 credit from our booking agency which we used towards a spa treatment, effectively getting a discount on that.
If you’re a Hilton Honors elite member, you might get small perks too, like a free cocktail or activity, so it’s good to inquire.
Mind the Taxes and Service Charges
In the Maldives, prices are usually quoted without the roughly 27% combined taxes/service charge.
That consists of a 10% service charge, 16% GST (as of 2025), and a flat Green Tax per person per night. We braced ourselves by mentally adding about 1/3 to every bill total.
For example, a $300 dinner would actually be nearly $400 after taxes and charges. Knowing this upfront helped prevent sticker shock at checkout.
It’s not a “hidden” fee since they do mention it, but it’s easy to forget when signing bills after a romantic dinner with wine. We simply budgeted a cushion for this in our overall costs.
Use Points or Miles
If you have Hilton Honors points or credit card rewards, a honeymoon is a great time to use them. Conrad Maldives is a Hilton property, and while availability for points stays can be limited, some people manage to book some nights on points to save thousands.
We didn’t use points for our stay (we wanted a specific villa type and package), but we did use airline miles to fly business class – making the long trip more comfortable at low cost. Consider leveraging any loyalty programs you have to ease the financial load, whether on flights or hotels.
Communicate and Pre-book
Surprisingly, pre-booking extras can sometimes save money. For instance, the resort offered an advance purchase deal on the seaplane lounge (in case someone’s not in the honeymoon package) and a discounted meal package for Ithaa lunch if booked before arrival.
We emailed the resort ahead to ask about honeymoon specials and they informed us of a spa discount for advance booking. By locking in a couple’s spa package ahead of time, we got 15% off. So it never hurts to ask the reservations team if there are any pre-booking deals for dining, spa, or excursions.
They may have seasonal promotions (like a free sunset cruise if you book a minimum spa spend, etc.).
Travel Insurance
This is more about worry-proofing than saving money, but we were glad we purchased travel insurance that covered trip delays or cancellations.
In monsoon season, though rare, a seaplane could be delayed by bad weather; having insurance that would cover an extra night in Malé or rebooking flights gave us peace of mind.
Thankfully we didn’t need it, but knowing we had a safety net for unexpected costs (and given the trip’s price tag) was reassuring.
7-Day Honeymoon Itinerary
To bring it all together, here’s a day-by-day itinerary based on our 7-day stay at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island.
It blends relaxation, adventure, and special moments, and is designed for a summer honeymoon when you might have a mix of sunny days and a few rainy interludes.
Adjust it to your interests and pace – the beauty of this resort is that nothing is rigid, and you can be as spontaneous as you like. But having a framework ensured we made the most of our time while still soaking in that laid-back island life.
Day 1: Arrival and Island Indulgence
Land in Malé around midday and transfer via the 30-min seaplane to the resort. Enjoy the aerial views and let the excitement build!
Upon arrival at Conrad Rangali, your personal host will whisk you by buggy to your villa for check-in. We were greeted with chilled coconut water and a tour of our gorgeous villa.
Unwind from travel with a leisurely stroll around the islands.
Get your bearings – perhaps cross the footbridge connecting the two islands, hand in hand. We dipped into the ocean for our first swim in the shallow lagoon right outside our villa; the water was warm and crystal-clear, like nature’s saltwater pool.
If you’re up for it, this is a good time to hit the Quiet Zone pool (the adults-only infinity pool) and toast your arrival with a cocktail from the pool bar. We loved lounging on the sunbeds in the pool, surrounded by calm and turquoise beauty.
For your first night, keep it casual and romantic.
We opted for dinner at Atoll Market (buffet), so we could sample a bit of everything and dine under the stars with our feet in the sand.
The variety satisfied both of us – from grilled prawns to pasta to local curries – and no decisions needed after a long travel day. After dinner, take a moonlit walk back to your villa.
The path is softly lit, and you might even see baby sharks or rays in the lagoon under the boardwalk. We ended our day one soaking in our villa’s outdoor tub with a view of the moon over the water, utterly content that our honeymoon had begun.
Day 2: Exploration and a Night Under the Sea
Wake up to your first Maldivian sunrise. We ordered floating breakfast in our villa pool – it was such a treat to have a tray of pastries, tropical fruits, and coffee delivered and set adrift in our pool.
We giggled like kids feeding each other pineapple and toast while waist-deep in warm water! After that energizing start, head out for an adventure snorkel. We joined a snorkeling excursion that morning, which took us by boat to a nearby reef.
The guides pointed out vibrant corals and we even spotted a sea turtle gliding by. If you prefer, you could instead do the Lagoon Tour by boat around the islands – a more relaxed exploration to see hidden coves and maybe dolphins.
After lunch (we did a beachside pizza at Rangali Bar – casual and tasty), indulge in a couples spa treatment. A midday massage at the Overwater Spa was perfect to knead away any remaining jet lag.
The glass floor cutouts let us admire fish as we got pampered. Post-massage, enjoy the spa’s serenity deck or take a nap – you’re on honeymoon time, after all.
Tonight is the night for the dining highlight – Ithaa Undersea Restaurant. We reserved the sunset seating at Ithaa, so we arrived around 6 pm. Dressed up a bit (resort chic – I wore a sundress, he wore linen pants and a collared shirt), we descended into the ocean’s embrace.
Watching the sea life swim around us as we dined on a delicious six-course meal was pure magic. It’s a slow, sensual experience – about 2 hours of dining – but it flew by because we were in awe the whole time.
After dinner, take a short stroll under the stars or perhaps stop by Rangali Bar if you want a nightcap. They sometimes have live music or a DJ, but it’s never rowdy. We, however, were happy to retreat to our villa and replay the day’s wonders to each other.
Day 3: Adventure and Culture
Today, greet the day with a bit of fitness and fun. We woke up early for sunrise yoga on the beach, a complimentary group session the resort offered. Stretching together while the sun peeked over the horizon was a rejuvenating way to start. Post-yoga, we had a hearty breakfast at Vilu Restaurant, lingering over cappuccinos and fresh mango while watching reef fish in the lagoon.
Later in the morning, we set out on a guided nature walk around the islands. A staff guide showed us the organic gardens where they grow herbs and told us about the native plants and sustainability initiatives (like their coral planting project).
It was nice to see the resort’s eco-friendly side and we even planted a coral frame together under the guide’s supervision – a small contribution to the reef restoration effort.
Time for some thrill! We decided on a jet ski safari (the resort offers various water sports, and we had our eye on this). Skimming across the open sea was exhilarating, and at one point our guide led us to a spot known for dolphins – and we got lucky with a few popping up!
Alternatively, if motor sports aren’t your thing, you could go for a catamaran sail or try windsurfing with the steady summer breezes. For a lower-key afternoon, another option is taking advantage of the teppanyaki cooking class or a cocktail-making class (they sometimes organize these for fun).
We actually joined a Maldivian curry cooking class this afternoon; learning to cook together was hilarious and bonding (plus, we got to eat what we made for lunch!).
Dive into local culture with Maldivian Night at Atoll Market (if it’s the scheduled night for it).
We did this on our Day 3 and loved the buffet of local specialties (try the grilled reef fish and coconut desserts) and the traditional Boduberu performance after dinner. The drummers and dancers were passionate and invited guests to join – we even tried a few moves, laughing all the way.
If the cultural night isn’t on Day 3 for you, swap in another dinner of your choice (perhaps the Koko Grill for an intimate dinner under the stars with Japanese flavors). End the night with a stroll and do some stargazing – the Milky Way was clearly visible on our walk back, given the minimal light pollution.
We lay on the villa deck counting shooting stars – a fitting end to an adventurous day.
Day 4: Underwater Wonders and Private Moments
After a couple active days, take it slow today. Enjoy breakfast in bed or on your deck. We spent the morning snorkeling right off our water villa – the house reef drop-off was teeming with life in the morning light.
If you’re a diver, this might be a good morning for a two-tank dive while conditions are calm (we did a deep dive to a nearby shipwreck site that was spectacular). Non-divers could try the Glass-Bottom Boat tour to see the reef without getting wet.
We planned nothing but relaxation. This is a great time to utilize your couples photoshoot that may be included or that you can book with the resort photographer.
In our case, a photographer took us around sunset to some picturesque spots – walking on the beach, sitting on the swing in the shallow water, and even a cute shot of us on the bridge linking the islands. It was fun and the results were frame-worthy.
If you prefer more adrenaline, Day 4 afternoon could also be when you try something like parasailing or wind-surfing if conditions allow. But for us, a nap in the hammock for two suspended over the lagoon was perfect.
We had reserved the Private Beach Dinner. The staff set up our table on the far end of the beach, away from any restaurants, so it was just us with candles and the soft sound of the sea.
Our menu: a Maldivian lobster bisque to start, grilled beef tenderloin and reef fish as mains, and a decadent chocolate cake that had “Happy Honeymoon” written in icing. It was beyond romantic – at one point, we literally had our toes in the water as the gentle tide rolled in.
The resort also surprised us with a Boduberu drummer coming by to serenade briefly (part of the private dinner package) – it was a short performance under the stars, just for us, adding to the magic. If a beach dinner isn’t arranged, you could opt for a dinner at Sunset Grill on Day 4 instead, to catch the gorgeous dusk views.
After dinner, we joined the Open-air Cinema by Rangali Bar that plays on select nights. Snuggling up on a beanbag on the beach, watching a classic movie under the night sky, was an idyllic way to wind down.
Day 5: Discover South Ari
This day was all about exploring beyond the resort. We embarked on the Whale Shark Excursion – a must in South Ari Atoll. The boat departed mid-morning, taking us to a known whale shark feeding area about an hour away. We were giddy with excitement and a bit of nerves.
Once a whale shark was spotted, we slid into the water with our guide and snorkeled alongside this gentle giant, as described earlier. It was awe-inspiring and humbling.
If sea conditions or luck don’t favor whale sharks that day, the excursion often doubles as a general snorkel trip – the crew will take you to another vibrant reef or two, so either way you see something amazing.
After returning and having lunch (we did quick salads and satay at Mandhoo to stay light), consider visiting a local island. We arranged a short trip to a nearby inhabited island (about 20 minutes away by speedboat) where we got to walk through a village, see a local school, and buy a couple of handmade souvenirs.
It was eye-opening to see the simplicity of island life and it gave us more appreciation for the Maldives beyond the resort. If you’re too tired for an outing, another option is to enjoy the resort’s afternoon tea offering at Rangali Bar or your villa – finger sandwiches and sweets Maldivian style.
Tonight might be a good night to try Ufaa by Jereme Leung, Conrad’s Chinese specialty restaurant, or any restaurant you haven’t yet. We actually were torn, so we did appetisers and cocktails during Happy Hour at the Quiet Zone (they had half-price drinks around sunset by the pool) and then went to Vilu for a late dinner.
Vilu’s romantic atmosphere with live acoustic music on some nights made it an ideal last formal dinner for us. Toast to an incredible day of discoveries.
After dinner, take a slow walk back… maybe even detour to the spa jetty – that’s where we saw bioluminescent plankton sparkling in the wet sand when the waves receded, a true natural wonder like stars at our feet.
Day 6: Last Full Day of Bliss
Savor your final full day by doing exactly what you love most. For us, that meant sleeping in! We drew a bath in our open-air bathroom and enjoyed a morning soak together as the sun peeked in. If you’re early risers, you could seize the day with another snorkel or perhaps a kayak paddle at sunrise when the ocean is like glass.
We treated ourselves to the “Breakfast in the Jungle” experience (an option where they set up a private breakfast in the island garden). It was a change of scenery, dining amid tropical foliage with birds chirping – felt like our own secret garden.
This could alternatively be another great morning for a couple’s photoshoot if you haven’t done one, catching the mid-morning light. Take this time to do anything you missed or repeat a favorite activity. Loved the spa? Book another massage or a facial. Couldn’t get enough snorkeling? Borrow the fins and head out again.
We went for a last snorkel around 3 pm, revisiting our favorite patch of reef and saying “see you later” to the fish. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon by the infinity pool (Quiet Zone), enjoying tropical piña coladas and playing our favorite songs on the pool’s speakers. It was lazy and perfect.
As the sun set on our last night, we did one of the most cliché yet wonderful things – a sunset beach photoshoot of just us (with our own camera on tripod). The sky turned shades of cotton candy pink and violet, and we danced on the beach without a care in the world.
For dinner, if you haven’t yet tried Cheese & Wine Bar, this could be a fun, casual final night choice – sharing fondue and wine under candlelight is quite romantic (and a bit different after all the seafood). We opted to revisit our favorite, Mandhoo, for a light dinner since we were still blissfully full from the day’s indulgences.
Back at our villa, we found a farewell surprise: the staff had drawn a bubble bath in our tub and decorated the bathroom with candles and rose petals (a parting honeymoon gift from the team).
It was such a sweet gesture that encapsulated how cared for we felt all week. We soaked and reflected on all the incredible moments we’d collected.
Day 7: Farewell, Rangali (Departure Day)
It’s time to say goodbye – but not without one last memory. We scheduled a floating breakfast again, because why not end as we started? The staff delivered it a bit earlier since our seaplane was mid-morning.
We savored those last bites of mango under the Maldivian sun, trying to imprint every detail of the view into our minds. Our luggage was collected and our host came to take us to the seaplane platform.
The seaplane flight back was bittersweet – as we rose into the sky, we watched Rangali Island become a tiny green speck amid the blues, feeling grateful and a tad emotional.
At Malé airport, we still had a few hours before our international flight, so we relaxed in the Conrad Lounge one more time (they allowed us to use it on departure as well, which was lovely – we squeezed in a final snack and cool drink in comfort).
Then, hand in hand, we boarded our flight home, already reminiscing about our week in paradise. We traveled back with a golden glow on our skin and an even brighter glow in our hearts. On the plane, we started sorting through a few of the hundreds of photos we took, reliving each day’s highlights.
Every snapshot – whether it was us in snorkel gear with goofy smiles, clinking glasses undersea at Ithaa, or snuggling on a hammock over turquoise water – told a story of a honeymoon that was everything we dreamed and more.
Feel free to tailor this itinerary. Maybe swap a spa day with an extra dive, or add a day trip to a nearby resort if you’re curious. The beauty of Conrad Maldives is that inspiration is everywhere – their team even provides suggested itineraries and will help design your days if you ask.
We followed our hearts and this plan pretty closely, but also left room for spontaneous romance (like an impromptu midnight swim under the full moon – highly recommended if you’re comfortable, it was exhilarating and safe in the calm lagoon).
The key is: do what makes both of you happiest, whether that’s a day packed with activities or one spent entirely in the privacy of your villa. On a honeymoon, there’s no such thing as a wasted day.
Making the Experience Extra Special
A Conrad Maldives honeymoon is inherently special, but we found a few little touches went a long way to personalize our trip and add extra romance:
- Plan Surprises for Each Other: We each secretly planned a surprise during the trip. Mine was the private beach dinner on Day 4, and my spouse arranged with the staff to have our villa decorated extravagantly while we were at dinner on Day 6 – we returned to find a trail of flower petals, candles, and towel swans on the bed spelling out “LOVE”. It was heart-melting. Even simple surprises like ordering your partner’s favorite dessert to the room, or scheduling a shout-out to them during an activity, can create beautiful moments. The resort staff are wonderful co-conspirators for surprises – they helped coordinate our ideas eagerly.
- Capture the Memories: We cannot recommend the couples photoshoot enough (if not included, consider hiring the resort photographer for an hour). We came away with professional shots of us in this stunning environment – a priceless souvenir. Additionally, we brought a Polaroid camera which produced adorable instant snaps that we used to journal our trip in real-time. One evening, we also did a DIY photoshoot at Ithaa’s empty deck during visiting hours – dressed up in wedding attire we had brought (why not wear the gown and suit again for fun?), with tropical fish as our witnesses. It was playful and resulted in unique honeymoon “wedding” photos underwater! Of course, drone photography is tempting here given the beauty – Conrad does allow drones in designated areas with permission, so if you have one and are into aerial shots, just inform your host to get clearance.
- Local Touches: Embrace Maldivian culture in little ways. We fell in love with Maldivian boduberu music – so we asked if they had a recording, and the team gave us a link to some traditional songs which we now play at home for nostalgia. We also bought a handmade lacquer box and a sarong from the gift shop, supporting local artisans. Using these at home reminds us of the islands. At the resort, try saying a few local words (“Shukuriyaa” means thank you) to staff – they light up when you do. We learned about the constellations visible from the southern hemisphere thanks to an enthusiastic staff member who pointed them out one night. These cultural and personal connections made our stay feel richer and more meaningful.
- Upgrade Experiences, Not Just Things: Rather than upgrading to the highest room category, we chose to allocate some budget to experience upgrades. For example, instead of a standard snorkel trip, we did the whale shark special trip. Instead of just any massage, we did the couple’s spa package with extra time in the private spa lounge. These upgrades gave us memories rather than just material perks. Another idea: if flying long-haul, consider using miles or paying for a business class seat – starting and ending your honeymoon in comfort and style sets a great tone (we still talk about the fancy lounge and lie-flat seats as part of the treat).
- Relax and Disconnect: One of the most special things you can do is be present with each other. We made a pact to minimize our screen time – the Wi-Fi is great on the island, but we chose to pretend it was 1990 and not check work emails or social media. Instead, we kept a little travel diary, writing down funny moments or great quotes from each day. In the afternoons, we sometimes read to each other from a book of love poems we brought, lounging on our net hammock. It sounds sappy, but these quiet bonding moments are what truly made our honeymoon feel like a romantic retreat. The resort naturally encourages this with its serene atmosphere. You’ll find spots like the Overwater hammocks, the lounging nets at the Quiet Zone, or simply your villa deck at sunrise, are ideal for quiet conversations or shared silences that bring you closer.
- Take Home a Piece of Paradise: On our last day, we visited the small marine biology center and “adopted” a coral frame that we helped plant. They’ll send us updates with photos as it grows, which is such a cool ongoing connection to our honeymoon. We also filled an empty wine bottle with sand from the beach (with permission – taking a small amount of sand or a few shells as mementos is usually fine, but always good to ask). This bottle now sits on our shelf at home, a tangible memory of the feel of Rangali’s soft white sand between our toes. We joked that whenever marital stress comes up in the future, we’ll shake our “Maldives sand snow-globe” and remember how it felt to be utterly carefree there.
Finally, go with the flow. A worry-free honeymoon isn’t about controlling every detail; it’s about trusting that you’re in one of the world’s most incredible places for romance and that the resort’s staff have your back.
We had a small rain squall interrupt one of our beach afternoons – instead of pouting, we ran laughing through the warm rain and ended up at the spa for impromptu tea and macarons, watching the rain dance on the lagoon. It became a favorite memory.
Worry-free means if plans change, you’re still in paradise and with your favorite person – nothing can really go “wrong.” Conrad Maldives’ team seemed to intuitively know this, as they were always ready to adjust schedules, reschedule an outdoor dinner under shelter if needed, or simply deliver popcorn to our villa when we decided last-minute to have a movie night in.
That flexibility and genuine care ensured our focus stayed on each other and the joy of the moment.
Our Forever Memory
As we flew home, sun-kissed and blissed out, we realized that Conrad Maldives Rangali Island had given us the gift of pure time together. The worry-free planning and execution meant we could truly immerse in every experience, from the adrenaline rush of snorkeling with a whale shark to the quiet thrill of sharing a sunrise in complete peace.
Each day felt like a chapter in a love story we were writing, with the resort’s dreamy setting as the backdrop and its staff as the supporting cast making everything seamless.
If you’re a honeymooner reading this, perhaps bags half-packed and itinerary in hand, our advice to you is this: let the Maldives cast its spell on you. There is a special kind of romance in these islands, something about the way the stars reflect on the sea, or how you can feel utterly alone with your beloved even when others are around.
At Conrad Rangali, we truly felt that no request was too large and no detail too small; it’s a place that understands honeymooners and goes out of its way to make a once-in-a-lifetime trip extraordinary.
Months later, we still find ourselves daydreaming about those lazy afternoons on our villa deck, or humming the tune of a boduberu song that we heard on the breeze.
