LATAM Airlines is preparing to shake up the long-haul market in 2027 with Premium Comfort, a new mid-tier cabin on its Boeing 787 fleet that promises true premium-economy space, advanced in-flight technology and pricing pitched as an attainable step up from standard economy.

A Dedicated Premium Cabin Built for Long-Haul Flyers
Announced in August 2025 as part of LATAM’s broader 787 retrofit program, Premium Comfort represents the group’s first fully fledged long-haul premium economy product rather than a rebranded extra-legroom section. The cabin will debut across Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft from 2027, slotting between the carrier’s new doored Premium Business suites and its refreshed economy cabin.
LATAM has not disclosed final seat counts by aircraft type, but executives describe Premium Comfort as a “distinct, quiet zone” ahead of the main economy cabin, with its own dedicated crew and tailored service flow. The move positions LATAM to compete more directly with European and North American carriers that already offer true premium economy on long routes to and from South America.
The product also arrives as LATAM completes a multiyear, multimillion-dollar investment in its 787 interiors, including new business-class suites and upgraded economy seating. Premium Comfort is framed internally as the final piece of a three-tier long-haul strategy designed to capture passengers who want more comfort and privacy than economy offers without paying business-class fares.
Recaro PL3530 Seating: Comfort Engineering at the Core
At the heart of Premium Comfort will be the Recaro PL3530 long-range premium class seat, developed in partnership between LATAM, Recaro Aircraft Seating and design firm PriestmanGoode. The PL3530 is a modern premium economy platform already flying on several international airlines, but LATAM is specifying custom finishes and details informed by South American textures and colors.
The seat offers a deeper recline than standard economy, an articulating seat pan, adjustable leg and foot rests, and individually adjustable lumbar support. These features are intended to reduce pressure points on overnight sectors between South America, North America and Europe, where many passengers routinely spend 10 to 12 hours in the air.
In keeping with LATAM’s wider cabin refresh, Premium Comfort seats will be upholstered in high-quality materials with a focus on recycled content, echoing the recycled leather and low-impact finishes already introduced in the new 787 business and economy cabins. Wider armrests, personal reading lights and larger tray tables are designed to support both work and rest without encroaching on neighboring passengers.
Advanced In-Flight Technology and Thoughtful Amenities
Technology is another cornerstone of Premium Comfort. Each PL3530 seat will be paired with a 16-inch 4K seatback screen connected to LATAM’s updated Panasonic Avionics entertainment platform, a step up from the smaller HD monitors in economy. The system will support a refreshed content library, including regional films and series, as well as improved map and information features aimed at long-haul travelers.
Passengers can expect multiple charging options at every seat, combining high-output USB-C power with AC outlets to handle laptops, tablets and phones simultaneously. LATAM is also working to harmonize Premium Comfort with its evolving onboard connectivity offering, with the goal of enabling video calls, streaming and real-time messaging where satellite coverage and bandwidth permit.
Soft-product details are still being finalized, but the airline has signaled that Premium Comfort will feature an upgraded dining experience with more substantial main courses, a broader beverage selection and expanded South American flavors compared with economy. Enhanced pillows and blankets, noise-reducing headphones and priority boarding are also under consideration to round out the sense of “affordable luxury.”
Pricing Strategy and Market Positioning for 2027
While LATAM has not yet published fare tables for Premium Comfort, the airline describes the product as intentionally accessible. Executives say pricing will be calibrated to attract a broad mix of travelers, including leisure customers on once-in-a-lifetime trips, small-business owners, and corporate travelers whose policies do not extend to business class on all routes.
The carrier’s current extra-legroom Economy Plus product has shown sustained demand on long-haul routes, particularly during peak holiday periods and major events. LATAM plans to transition many of these customers to Premium Comfort by offering more compelling value: a clearly differentiated seat, richer amenities and tangible time savings at the airport through dedicated check-in and early boarding where infrastructure allows.
Industry analysts expect LATAM’s move to put pressure on competitors in Latin America that still operate two-class long-haul cabins or rely on modestly enhanced economy sections. By 2027, LATAM’s 787 network is forecast to serve a dense web of routes connecting Santiago, São Paulo and Lima with major North American and European gateways, giving Premium Comfort significant visibility among connecting and point-to-point passengers.
What Passengers Can Expect as Launch Nears
With first Premium Comfort flights planned for 2027, LATAM will use 2026 to complete the bulk of its 787 refurbishments and refine the new cabin’s service elements through mock-ups and test flights. Frequent flyers can expect more detailed announcements on route rollout, seat maps and upgrade mechanisms as cabin installation timelines are confirmed.
Questions remain around how Premium Comfort will integrate with LATAM Pass redemptions, corporate contracts and partner-airline bookings, especially on joint ventures and codeshares. The airline has indicated that it intends to support mileage redemptions and paid upgrades into the new cabin, but specific rules and pricing are still under review.
For travelers planning long-haul trips to and from South America in 2027 and beyond, Premium Comfort signals that LATAM aims to narrow the gap with leading global carriers on comfort and technology while maintaining a price point below business class. If the airline delivers on its promises around space, service and affordability, the new cabin could quickly become the preferred choice for passengers seeking a more humane long-haul experience without a five-figure fare.
