Scenic Group has unveiled plans to add three new luxury river ships to its fleet between 2027 and early 2028, a move that significantly boosts the company’s capacity on Europe’s Douro River and Asia’s Mekong as demand for high-end, small-ship cruising continues to accelerate.

New Ships Extend Scenic’s Reach in Europe and Asia
The expansion will see one Emerald Cruises Star-Ship and two ultra-luxury Scenic Space-Ships join the fleet, reinforcing Scenic Group’s dual-brand strategy in the premium and ultra-luxury segments. The new vessels are scheduled to enter service in 2027 and 2028, deepening the company’s presence on two of the world’s fastest-growing river cruise corridors.
Emerald Nova, a Star-Ship for the Emerald Cruises brand, is set to launch in June 2027 on Portugal’s Douro River, where it will sail alongside Emerald Radiance. Scenic Aria, a new Scenic Space-Ship, will follow on the Douro in September 2027, expanding the group’s all-inclusive, ultra-luxury offering on one of Europe’s most in-demand wine and culture routes.
In early 2028, Scenic Spirit II, a sister ship to the existing Scenic Spirit, will debut on the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia. The new vessel will increase Scenic’s capacity in Southeast Asia and provide additional inventory for itineraries that pair river cruising with land extensions to key regional gateways such as Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap and Hanoi.
Collectively, the three ships mark the next phase of fleet growth for Scenic Group and align with the company’s broader strategy of balancing European river deployment with targeted expansion in Asia’s emerging luxury cruise markets.
Responding to Rising Demand for Premium River Cruising
Scenic Group’s latest order comes as river cruising continues to recover and expand in the wake of global travel disruptions, with premium and luxury segments leading the rebound. Longer booking windows, higher on-board spend and a growing preference for smaller vessels with high service levels have encouraged operators to invest in new tonnage.
Company founder and chairman Glen Moroney has framed the three-ship commitment as a direct response to robust demand for the group’s style of inclusive luxury. The combination of Scenic’s ultra-luxury positioning and Emerald’s contemporary premium product has allowed the group to capture travelers seeking elevated but relaxed experiences, particularly among North American, British and Australian source markets.
Analysts note that capacity on key rivers such as the Douro and Mekong is tightening as more travelers trade ocean megaships for intimate river vessels that can dock closer to historic city centers and rural villages. Scenic’s decision to double down on these rivers positions the brand to benefit from constrained supply and rising yields, especially during peak spring and autumn seasons.
Travel advisors report that new-to-river clients are increasingly booking higher cabin categories, including suites with balconies, and are willing to pay a premium for immersive shore excursions and fine dining. Scenic Group’s new ships are being designed to tap that trend, with larger suites, upgraded public spaces and expanded wellness and culinary offerings.
Doubling Down on the Douro’s Wine and Culture Appeal
The Douro Valley has emerged as one of Europe’s hottest river cruise destinations, thanks to its terraced vineyards, boutique wine estates and compact towns that lend themselves to slow travel. By basing both Emerald Nova and Scenic Aria on the Douro, Scenic Group is signaling strong confidence in the river’s long-term growth potential.
Emerald Nova will join the existing Emerald Radiance to serve travelers looking for a contemporary, value-rich premium product, with amenities such as a pool and cinema and a focus on active excursions and relaxed onboard ambiance. Scenic Aria, by contrast, will target guests seeking an ultra-luxury experience with a higher staff-to-guest ratio, butler service and an expanded selection of inclusive fine wines and excursions.
Industry observers say the investment reflects a broader shift in the Douro market, which has rapidly evolved from a niche wine route to a mainstream luxury destination. The river’s relatively short cruise itineraries, typically seven nights, appeal to travelers adding a river sailing onto longer trips through Portugal or wider Europe, a pattern that has supported strong shoulder-season bookings.
With two newbuilds on the way and additional capacity already operating, Scenic Group is poised to capture a larger share of this demand, especially from repeat river cruisers who want to explore new itineraries without compromising on ship quality.
Strengthening Scenic’s Footprint on the Mekong
The decision to introduce Scenic Spirit II on the Mekong underlines the growing appeal of Southeast Asia for luxury river cruise guests. While capacity on the Mekong remains smaller than on Europe’s major rivers, demand for culturally rich itineraries that blend temple visits, local markets and rural village experiences has been steadily rising.
Scenic Spirit II will mirror the successful design of Scenic Spirit, offering spacious suites, a focus on regional cuisine and curated excursions that connect guests with communities along the river. The additional ship will enable more flexible deployment, including staggered departures and new combinations of Vietnam and Cambodia itineraries designed to appeal to long-haul travelers from North America and Europe.
The Mekong expansion also taps into a wider regional trend as Southeast Asian destinations invest in river infrastructure, shore attractions and premium hospitality. Scenic Group’s enhanced capacity positions it to work more closely with local partners, from heritage sites to boutique producers, creating deeper economic benefits in the river communities visited.
For travelers, the arrival of Scenic Spirit II will increase availability during peak dry-season months, when comfortable weather conditions and reliable water levels are most conducive to river cruising and land touring in the region.
Part of a Wider Wave of Fleet Growth
The three new river ships are part of Scenic Group’s largest fleet expansion in nearly a decade. They follow previously announced river newbuilds Emerald Astra, debuting on the Rhine, Main and Danube in May 2026, and Emerald Lumi, set to launch on the Seine in 2027, as well as a trio of new luxury yachts and the Scenic Ikon ocean vessel later in the decade.
Together, the investments illustrate the group’s confidence in sustained growth across both river and small-ship ocean cruising. By layering additional capacity onto already popular European rivers and selectively expanding in Asia, Scenic Group is aiming to diversify itinerary options while maintaining the intimate ship sizes that define its brands.
For destinations along the Douro and Mekong, the increased berth of high-spend cruise guests is expected to support local tourism ecosystems, from family-owned quintas and craft producers in Portugal to small businesses and cultural sites in Vietnam and Cambodia. As bookings open for the newly announced ships, river cruise stakeholders will be watching closely to see how quickly capacity is absorbed in what has become one of the travel industry’s most resilient premium segments.
