Foreign visitors can rent a car in Lviv with a passport, a national driving license and an International Driving Permit. An economy car costs from $25 a day, and the refundable deposit starts at $400, or $100 if you take full insurance. At Car-Rent.ua, drivers must be at least 20 years old with two years of driving experience.
Lviv airport still has no passenger flights, so most travelers arrive overland from Poland, and the rental car can be waiting for you at the border. Below are the pickup options, what the price includes, the martial-law rules on Ukrainian roads and the best day trips from the city. Prices and conditions are as of October 2026.

Getting to Lviv and picking up your car
Lviv airport still has no regular passenger flights. Ukrainian airspace has been closed to civil aviation since February 2022. In March 2026 the government set up a working group to reopen Lviv, Boryspil and Zhuliany, and in July 2026 Lviv's mayor said flights could restart within weeks once security issues are resolved. No date has been confirmed, so check the airport's status before you book.
Until flights return, most international visitors reach Lviv overland from Poland:
- By train. Ukrainian Railways runs direct trains from Przemyśl, just across the border, to Lviv's main station. Most schedules avoid arriving during the midnight curfew.
- By bus or transfer. Regular buses run from Kraków, Rzeszów and Przemyśl. A pre-booked transfer saves you a late-night search for transport after the border.
- Nearest working airports. Rzeszów and Kraków in Poland are the usual entry points; from there you continue by train or road.
Where to collect the car. At Car-Rent.ua you can pick up a car at the office on Dmytra Vitovskoho St, 29, open daily from 10:00 to 19:00, or have it brought to you. Delivery to a hotel, apartment or Lviv's railway station costs $10–25; delivery outside the city costs $25–200 depending on distance. Pick-ups and returns outside office hours can be arranged in advance, which helps if your train arrives in the evening. You can compare models and book car rental in Lviv online before you travel.
Pick up the car at the Polish border. If you cross by road, the car can be waiting for you at the Shehyni or Krakovets checkpoint on the Ukrainian side. You drive straight to Lviv instead of changing to a bus or train. This is charged as delivery outside the city, within the $25–200 range depending on distance; confirm the exact price when you book.
What you need to rent a car as a foreign driver
The requirements are close to what you would expect in the EU, with one document many visitors forget: the International Driving Permit.

An additional driver costs nothing at Car-Rent.ua, but every person who drives must show their own documents at pick-up. Managers speak English, so the contract and the inspection of the car can be done in English.
Prices, deposit and insurance: what you actually pay
The daily rate in Lviv starts at $25 per day for an economy car and falls for longer rentals. The headline rate is only part of the bill, so check what it covers before comparing companies.
Included in the price at Car-Rent.ua: a clean car with a full tank, CASCO (comprehensive) insurance with a deductible, 24/7 roadside assistance and a replacement car if yours needs servicing. An additional driver and a child seat are free.
The deposit starts at $400 and depends on the car class. It is blocked when you collect the car and returned after the car is inspected on return. If you would rather not leave a large deposit, take full insurance instead: the daily rate is higher, and the deposit drops to $100, which covers items such as fines or missing fuel. With standard CASCO you are covered for damage above the deductible, so ask for the deductible amount for your car class when you book.
Mileage is limited to 300 km per day or 4,800 km per month. That is enough for a return trip from Lviv to the Carpathians; extra kilometers cost $0.10–0.30 each.

Book early in the week. At Car-Rent.ua, demand peaks on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, when most cars go out for the weekend, and returns cluster on Sundays and Mondays. “If you want a specific model for the weekend, reserve it by Wednesday. By Friday the choice in popular classes is much smaller,” says Mykola Usov, manager at Car-Rent.ua. [ЦИТАТА — ПОГОДИТИ]
Driving in Ukraine during martial law
Driving in western Ukraine works much like elsewhere in Europe, but martial law adds a few rules you will not meet at home. Check your government's travel advice before the trip as well. None of them is complicated if you know them in advance.
- Curfew. In Lviv and the Lviv region it runs from 00:00 to 05:00. Private cars should not be on the road during these hours without a pass, so plan long drives to finish before midnight. Other regions may set different hours.
- Restricted areas. Rental contracts forbid driving into occupied territories and active combat zones. Western Ukraine and the Carpathians are far from both.
- Air-raid alerts. Install the Air Alert app, which sends notifications by region. Traffic does not stop automatically during an alert, but follow any police instructions; if you hear explosions, stop safely and go to the nearest shelter.
- Checkpoints. Expect occasional police or military checkpoints on main roads. Slow down, keep your passport, license and rental contract within reach, and never photograph checkpoints, military vehicles or infrastructure.
Standard traffic rules matter just as much:
Rule |
Limit |
|---|---|
Speed in towns and cities |
50 km/h |
Speed outside settlements |
90 km/h |
Speed on motorways |
130 km/h |
Blood alcohol |
0.2‰, effectively zero tolerance |
Headlights outside settlements |
Dipped beam or daytime running lights on from October to May |
Useful numbers: police 102, ambulance 103, Car-Rent.ua 24/7 support +38 096 700 34 34. Download offline maps and carry some hryvnia in cash: card payments are widespread in Lviv but less reliable in mountain villages.
Which car to choose
The right class depends less on the city than on where you plan to drive after it. These are the models Car-Rent.ua customers choose most often, grouped by purpose. Many of them are available in Lviv; check the exact model for your dates when you book.

One-way rentals and leaving Ukraine
You do not have to return the car in Lviv. Car-Rent.ua also has offices in Kyiv and Odesa, and dropping the car in another Ukrainian city costs $150–250. This works well if you enter Ukraine from Poland, drive west to east and leave the car in Kyiv before continuing your trip.
Taking a rental car out of Ukraine is possible only by prior agreement with the company. Mention it when you book, not at pick-up.
Day trips from Lviv by car
A car is what turns a Lviv city break into a trip around western Ukraine. Most of these places are hard to reach by public transport and easy to reach in under three hours by road.

Why go |
Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
Zhovkva |
30 km, about 40 min |
Renaissance “ideal town” and a UNESCO-listed wooden church |
Combine with lunch on the market square |
Golden Horseshoe: Olesko, Pidhirtsi, Zolochiv castles |
About 1 hour to the first castle |
Three castles that fit into one day |
Start early; the loop is easiest by car |
Truskavets and Drohobych |
About 1.5 hours |
Spa town plus Drohobych's wooden churches |
Good half-day trip on the way to the mountains |
Tustan rock fortress |
About 2 hours |
Remains of a medieval fortress carved into cliffs |
Wear proper shoes for the short climb |
Slavske |
About 2–2.5 hours |
Nearest Carpathian ski and hiking area to Lviv |
In winter choose a car with higher clearance |
Yaremche |
About 3–3.5 hours |
Waterfalls, the Prut river and a base for Hoverla hikes |
Stay overnight rather than driving back the same day |
Plan return times around the midnight curfew, and keep the 300 km daily mileage limit in mind on longer loops: a return trip to Yaremche uses most of it.

Can I rent a car at Lviv airport? Not as a normal airport pick-up while passenger flights are suspended. You can have a car delivered to the railway station or your hotel for $10–25 within the city.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Ukraine? Yes. Rental companies ask foreign drivers for an IDP together with the national license, and it must be issued in your home country before you travel.

The bottom line
Renting a car in Lviv is straightforward for foreign visitors once you have three things ready: an International Driving Permit, a plan for getting from the Polish border to the city, and a route that keeps you within the curfew and the mileage limit. Book a few days ahead, especially for weekends, and arrange delivery to your hotel or the station so the car is waiting when you arrive.
