The area struck by the floods is an important route for religious tourism, particularly for Hindu pilgrims on the Kailash Manasarovar circuit to the sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet. Reports indicate that many of the missing Indians, as well as travellers from other countries of Indian origin, were part of organised pilgrimage groups transiting through the Rasuwagadhi Gyirong border crossing when the flood struck.
Several accounts describe large numbers of pilgrims and tourists gathered at immigration and customs posts along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli corridor at the time the river surged. For Nepal’s wider tourism sector, the timing is especially damaging. The late monsoon and early autumn period is normally when trekking and pilgrimage traffic to the higher Himalayas begins to build. The destruction of roads, bridges and support infrastructure along one of the key overland approaches to Tibet is expected to disrupt itineraries for weeks, and potentially longer in the hardest hit stretches where entire river crossings must be rebuilt.
Travel industry representatives quoted in local coverage have begun warning of knock on effects for communities along alternative routes, as emergency diversions send more freight and passenger traffic onto already fragile mountain roads.
