Coast-to-coast electrification finally in service
Infrastructure manager Infraestruturas de Portugal and national operator Comboios de Portugal have confirmed that from 19 July the full length of the Algarve line is energised and available for electric passenger services. The step follows the certification of the line’s new 25 kV overhead power system, clearing the way for through electric trains to run across the southern tip of the country.
The Algarve line stretches for around 140 kilometres, linking Lagos in the west with Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border. Until this summer, only the central section between Tunes and Faro was wired, a legacy of earlier upgrades to the southbound main line from Lisbon. The final pieces of the puzzle were the stretches from Faro to Vila Real de Santo António and from Tunes to Lagos, which have now been completed and approved for regular operation.
Trial runs over the eastern section between Faro and Vila Real de Santo António were carried out in June 2025, marking the first appearance of electric passenger trains along that part of the coast. Construction and testing then shifted focus to the western section to Lagos, allowing the network to be handed over for full electric regional services in mid-2026.
Rail industry outlets report that the electrification works form part of Portugal’s wider Ferrovia 2020 investment programme, co-financed by European funds, which focuses on modernising key passenger and freight corridors, particularly outside the country’s main urban centres.
What changes for passengers in the Algarve
For visitors planning to explore the Algarve by train, the most immediate change is the introduction of direct regional services linking Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António without the need to change trains in Faro. Published information from the operator indicates that these through services are designed to shorten end-to-end journey times and simplify itineraries across the region.
The move to electric traction is also expected to support more robust timetables. Electric multiple units typically offer stronger acceleration and shorter dwell times than older diesel sets, which can free up capacity on largely single-track routes such as the Algarve line. While detailed new timetables are still being fine-tuned, regional rail planners suggest that electrification should make it easier to add services at peak holiday periods.
Travellers can also expect a quieter ride. Electric trains generate less vibration and noise than diesel locomotives, which should be felt both on board and at stations serving popular resort areas such as Albufeira-Ferreiras, Portimão and Tavira. The completion of electrification coincides with Portugal’s efforts to make rail more attractive for domestic and regional travel, including new fare products that aim to draw passengers out of private cars and onto public transport. The Algarve works were supported by EU co-financing through the Portugal 2020 programme, which channels structural and cohesion funds into national infrastructure. Project documentation on the transparency portals describes the Algarve line as a priority regional corridor, serving a dense chain of coastal municipalities and providing a rail alternative to the busy EN125 highway that runs roughly parallel to the tracks.

Despite the delays, the project’s completion is being framed in published coverage as a turning point for the region’s rail services.
