Two large double-shield tunnel boring machines, known as “Wilma” and “Olga,” were assembled and commissioned for this lot, with start-up ceremonies reported in late 2024. Subsequent technical notes from the project company describe both machines advancing northwards in the two main tubes toward the Innsbruck area, reducing the remaining gap to just a few kilometers of rock.

Engineering briefings show that TBM operations in H53 are designed to run in parallel with conventional drill-and-blast work in complex geological zones. This mixed-method approach allows crews to keep up production targets even where fault zones or water-bearing strata require more cautious progress.

With the bulk of mechanized excavation now concentrated in this Austrian sector, reports suggest that 2026 will be a pivotal year, as sustained boring runs are expected to close the last major underground distance still separating the two national networks.

On the Italian side, mechanized excavation of the main tunnels has already reached the state border, according to announcements from the construction consortium and the project promoter. A tunnel boring machine designated “Flavia” completed its drive in the western main tube in 2025, following earlier breakthroughs in the eastern tube by TBM “Virginia.”

These milestones mean that the Italian half of the 64 kilometer system is structurally continuous up to the frontier, shifting attention squarely to the completion of the Austrian drives. Project documentation describes the Brenner Base Tunnel as a twin-tube railway system with an exploratory gallery beneath, providing additional safety and maintenance access once the line opens.

The cross-border character of the project has been reinforced by the breakthrough of the exploratory tunnel in 2025, which created the first continuous underground connection between Italy and Austria. Reports indicate that the remaining task for the main tubes now lies mostly north of the border, where 2026 tunnelling campaigns are expected to further align the Austrian and Italian segments.

This sequence, with Italian excavation reaching completion ahead of the final Austrian boring, reflects contractual and geological differences across the Alps. Nonetheless, both sides are coordinated through the joint project entity that oversees design, financing and construction for the entire base tunnel system.

Once complete, the Brenner Base Tunnel is intended to provide a low-gradient, high-capacity rail corridor through one of Europe’s busiest Alpine crossings. Public information from national rail infrastructure operators describes the line as a core part of the Scandinavian–Mediterranean corridor, one of the European Union’s flagship transcontinental transport axes.

By lowering the maximum gradient and significantly shortening travel times between Innsbruck and Fortezza, the new base tunnel is projected to attract both long-distance passenger services and high-volume freight. Engineering studies presented in recent years highlight its role in shifting freight transport from road to rail across the Brenner Pass, a corridor where heavy truck traffic has created sustained environmental and political pressure.

Austria and Italy have repeatedly underlined the tunnel’s importance for climate policy, with EU funding supporting roughly half of the project costs alongside national contributions. Published cost estimates have placed the overall budget in the multibillion-euro range, including extensive approach works north and south of the base tunnel itself.

For cross-border travelers, the project promises more frequent and faster international trains linking northern Italy, the Tyrol region and, in the long term, southern Germany. However, the full benefits will depend on parallel upgrades to existing lines and new approach sections beyond the tunnel portals.

Timelines, access routes and remaining uncertainties

Despite rapid progress underground, official timelines for the opening of the Brenner Base Tunnel remain closely tied to access works, particularly on the German side of the border. Reports on European rail planning note that while Austria and Italy have advanced both the base tunnel and their connecting lines, discussions on new or upgraded routes north of Innsbruck continue to influence expectations for the first through services.

Current public projections continue to reference an opening goal in the early 2030s, with 2032 appearing frequently in planning documentation as a target for the tunnel itself. The actual start of regular international operations could, however, depend on when cross-border infrastructure north of the Brenner corridor is ready to accommodate increased long-distance and freight traffic.

Within Austria and Italy, much of the necessary approach infrastructure has already been completed or is under construction. Sections around Innsbruck and Fortezza, together with bypass and upgrading projects along the main corridor, form part of a broader strategy to create a continuous high-capacity rail spine between Verona, the Tyrol and southern Germany.

At the same time, construction activity has brought years of heavy works to certain valleys, with access roads, work sites and spoil disposal areas creating localized impacts. Environmental groups and local authorities have focused on mitigation measures and long-term land restoration, which are expected to continue well after excavation ends.

As new tunnel boring on the Austrian side moves into what appears to be its final intensive phase in 2026, attention across the region is increasingly turning from the spectacle of large TBMs under the mountains to the long-term promise of a quieter, cleaner and more rail-focused Brenner corridor.
