Giant Sinkholes Become High-Profile Gateways

The region’s “tiankeng” giant sinkholes are emerging as a powerful draw for global adventure travelers and media. Leye County’s Dashiwei Tiankeng cluster, where vertical shafts drop hundreds of meters into hidden forests, has been profiled by UNESCO and international broadcasters as a frontier for exploration and biodiversity research. Shorter, loop-style visitor routes with multiple exits, careful monitoring of air quality and carbon dioxide, and limits on daily visitation in narrow chambers are presented as standard measures to ensure that underground tourism growth does not translate into higher casualty risks.

Balancing Conservation, Community and Global Demand

As Guangxi’s karst caves gain international visibility, questions over how benefits are shared and ecosystems protected are moving to the forefront. Research on cave resource protection in China argues for unified standards covering everything from lighting and walkway materials to visitor load thresholds, noting that piecemeal development in the past has left some sites scarred by graffiti, broken formations and untreated wastewater.

Recent news coverage from Guangxi recounts how a section of what local media describe as one of the world’s longest caves in Hechi was closed indefinitely after visitors carved their names into stalactites, triggering public debate about behavior in fragile underground environments. At the same time, policy statements and tourism case studies highlight the role of local communities. In areas where karst caves underlie villages and farmland, community members are increasingly involved as guides, homestay owners and custodians of access paths. For international travelers, these shifts mean that Guangxi’s underground world is becoming more accessible, but also more regulated and interpretive.
