The airport operator has therefore committed to a full replacement of Dock A, its dock base and tower, with a new complex positioned just north of the current facility.
The new Dock A is flagged as a multi year capital project with an investment volume exceeding CHF 1 billion when the terminal, new tower and associated airside works are combined. A distinctive element of Zurich’s modernisation is the decision to build the new Dock A as a largely timber structure. Official project pages highlight a “sustainable wooden dock” concept, with extensive use of engineered wood for the main structural components and a roof fully covered in photovoltaic panels. The design uses the dock’s sizeable footprint to host solar generation capable of supplying a significant share of the building’s electricity needs.
The choice of timber is positioned as a key lever in reducing embedded carbon compared with conventional concrete heavy terminal construction. Public material on the net zero roadmap indicates that Zurich Airport has already cut its own site emissions by around half since 1991, and plans more than CHF 300 million in climate and energy investments through 2040. Beyond the building fabric, the wider campus is seeing parallel investments in clean energy infrastructure. Runway Extensions and Ground Systems Boost Operational Stability
Alongside the Dock A transformation, Zurich Airport is pursuing airfield projects intended to strengthen safety margins and operational stability for future traffic levels. Planning applications have been submitted for runway extensions that would lengthen pistes 28 and 32, an initiative described in airport development documents as a way to improve safety buffers and allow more robust operating concepts during challenging weather and peak movements.
Taxiway routing is also being reconfigured, including a planned taxiway around runway 28 that will separate inbound and outbound aircraft flows more clearly. The goal is to reduce the risk of runway incursions and enable smoother ground movements, particularly during complex arrival and departure banks associated with the airport’s role as a hub for SWISS and its partners.
Behind the scenes, the baggage system is undergoing renewal, replacing older equipment with systems that comply with new European security and performance requirements. Work on the baggage sorting infrastructure started in the late 2010s and is staged so that capacity for current operations is maintained while new segments are brought online.

The CHF 1 billion Dock A programme, in combination with landside reconfiguration, Zone West development, climate and energy projects and runway adaptations, signals a strategic shift from incremental upgrades to a more holistic campus transformation. The operator emphasises that these works are spread over more than a decade, with key milestones between 2024 and the mid 2030s, to keep the airport fully operational as construction progresses.
For travellers, the tangible effects are likely to appear gradually: wider terminal routes, a modernised shopping and dining offer, new business aviation facilities and, later in the next decade, a light filled timber Dock A with updated lounges and gate areas.
