From Seasonal Trial to Permanent Link
When Etihad first announced four weekly flights between Abu Dhabi and Gothenburg starting 17 December 2026, the service was framed as a winter-season experiment intended to run until late March 2027. The route would become Gothenburg’s first nonstop air link to the Gulf, opening direct access to Abu Dhabi and one-stop connections across Etihad’s long-haul network into Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Publicly available route information described a flight time of around seven and a half hours, operated by an Airbus A321LR configured with First, Business and Economy cabins.
That seasonal plan has now been overtaken by demand. Swedavia, the operator of Göteborg Landvetter Airport, reports that bookings on the new Abu Dhabi route were so strong in both directions that Etihad has upgraded the service to a full year-round operation even before the inaugural flight has taken off. The revised plan keeps the four-times-weekly schedule in place beyond March 2027, signaling that the carrier sees sustained, not just seasonal, appetite for the connection.
According to Swedavia’s latest announcement, the decision reflects particularly robust interest from travelers in western Sweden heading to the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia, as well as inbound demand from Etihad’s global markets for a fresh Scandinavian destination. The move aligns with Etihad’s wider pattern of stepping up capacity on European routes once initial launches prove successful, as seen in its shift to daily services for Düsseldorf and Copenhagen from October 2025.
Gothenburg Rides Tourism Momentum
The year-round upgrade arrives at a moment when Gothenburg is already experiencing a strong tourism upswing. Data from Göteborg & Co show that 2025 was a notably strong year for the city’s visitor economy, with hotel metrics and overnight stays outpacing Sweden’s other major metropolitan regions. Local reporting indicates that Gothenburg has recorded around a 20 percent increase in visitor volumes since 2020, supported by a steady pipeline of major events and new attractions.
Recent snapshots from the city’s tourism monitoring highlight that July and August are peak months, driven by a crowded events calendar that includes music festivals, sports championships and large-scale city celebrations. This seasonal intensity is now being complemented by a broader spread of international arrivals across the year, as Gothenburg invests in conferences, trade fairs and city development projects designed to attract visitors beyond the traditional summer high season.
Regional studies on air connectivity commissioned by Business Region Göteborg point to a marked increase in the city’s international reach since 2022. One recent connectivity report notes particularly strong growth in links to Asia-Pacific markets and a significant rise in overall global connections from Gothenburg, even as domestic Swedish air traffic has been subdued. In this context, Etihad’s link through Abu Dhabi adds a new long-haul corridor to regions where demand from both leisure travelers and visiting friends and relatives is structurally high.
A New Middle East and Asia Corridor for Sweden
From a network perspective, Gothenburg’s new Etihad service plugs Sweden’s west coast directly into one of the Gulf’s fastest-growing hubs. Etihad’s current public network map shows coverage of more than 90 destinations worldwide, extending across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. Recent years have seen the airline deepen its presence in Europe while adding routes into high-growth Asian markets, including new services to Taipei and additional leisure points in Southeast Asia.
Abu Dhabi’s role as a connecting hub means that passengers from Gothenburg will gain easier one-stop access to cities across India, Southeast Asia and the broader Asia-Pacific region, markets that are important both for migrant communities in Sweden and for export-oriented companies in West Sweden. Business Region Göteborg has highlighted that many firms in the region maintain strong links with Asian supply chains and customers, underscoring the commercial relevance of more direct long-haul connectivity.
The Abu Dhabi–Gothenburg route also represents a diversification of Sweden’s long-haul options. Historically, most intercontinental traffic has been funneled through Stockholm Arlanda or via other European hubs. With Etihad now developing year-round operations from Gothenburg, passengers from western Sweden and southern Norway gain an alternative to backtracking through Stockholm, Copenhagen or continental European airports for long-haul journeys to the Gulf and beyond.
Competitive Pressure and Sustainability Context
Etihad’s expansion into Gothenburg comes as Gulf and European carriers continue to compete for Scandinavian traffic. The airline has already strengthened its Scandinavian footprint through enhanced services to Copenhagen and a broader commercial relationship with regional partners, while other Gulf carriers remain active primarily through Stockholm. The confirmation of year-round flights from Gothenburg adds another player into a market space that has traditionally been dominated by European network airlines and low-cost carriers.
Airport operator Swedavia frames the Gothenburg–Abu Dhabi link within its wider strategy to grow international connectivity while advancing decarbonization efforts. The company has set a target that 5 percent of all fuel used to refuel aircraft at Swedish airports will be fossil-free by 2025, driven by the promotion and uptake of sustainable aviation fuel. New long-haul services, such as Etihad’s, are being developed in parallel with these initiatives, positioning Gothenburg as a test bed for more climate-conscious growth in air travel.
For Etihad, the move supports ongoing efforts to increase aircraft utilization on fuel-efficient narrowbodies and to match capacity with markets where premium and leisure demand intersect. Deploying the Airbus A321LR on a relatively long sector between Abu Dhabi and Gothenburg allows the airline to offer a three-cabin product on a right-sized aircraft, a configuration that can be attractive for both price-sensitive holidaymakers and higher-yield business travelers.
Gothenburg’s Bid to Become a European Holiday Gateway
Beyond pure connectivity metrics, the year-round Abu Dhabi service reinforces Gothenburg’s ambition to be recognized as a major European city-break and summer holiday destination in its own right. Tourism organizations such as Visit Sweden and Göteborg & Co have been promoting the city’s coastal setting, cultural scene and theme-park attractions, while emphasizing rail and other climate-conscious modes for domestic travel. The addition of direct long-haul air access opens the door for more visitors from the Middle East, India and Asia to include Gothenburg in wider European itineraries.
Planners in West Sweden have been working collaboratively through a partnership that includes Swedavia, Visit Sweden, Göteborg & Co, Turistrådet Västsverige, Business Region Göteborg and the West Sweden Chamber of Commerce to market the new route and the region internationally. Public material from these organizations highlights the goal of using the Abu Dhabi connection to draw higher-spending overnight visitors, support meetings and events, and encourage year-round tourism rather than concentrating activity into a brief summer surge.
If demand trends continue as indicated in early booking data, Gothenburg’s upgraded link to Abu Dhabi could accelerate its evolution from secondary Scandinavian city to a recognized European gateway for travelers heading into the Nordics and out toward the Middle East and Asia. For Sweden’s second-largest city, the result is a new position on the global route map that aligns with its broader economic and tourism growth trajectory.
