Largest Ship Yet Marks Halfway Point in Six Vessel Program
The handover of EXPLORA III represents the midway stage of Explora Journeys’ planned six ship fleet, a multibillion euro investment program by parent company MSC Group focused on the top end of the cruise market. Publicly available information indicates that the vessel becomes the line’s third ship in service, following EXPLORA I and EXPLORA II, and is currently the largest ship in the Explora Journeys roster by gross tonnage.
Reports from industry coverage describe a traditional delivery ceremony at the Sestri Ponente yard involving senior figures from Explora Journeys, MSC Group and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, underlining the strategic importance of the project for both the brand and Italy’s cruise shipbuilding sector. The ceremony closed a construction phase that included several earlier milestones, such as float out and sea trials in the Mediterranean.
Delivery in Genoa also reinforces the close relationship between MSC’s luxury division and Fincantieri. All six Explora Journeys vessels are being built at Italian yards, and the program has been positioned in public statements as a long term partnership aimed at evolving ship design, energy efficiency and guest experience at the luxury end of ocean travel.
Industry observers note that reaching the halfway point gives the brand a critical mass of capacity while additional ships are completed through the decade, allowing Explora Journeys to scale its presence across different regions without waiting for the full six ship lineup to enter service.
First LNG Powered Vessel for the Explora Journeys Fleet
Technical information released ahead of delivery shows that EXPLORA III is the first Explora Journeys ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas. This design step follows a broader trend in the cruise sector toward LNG as a transition fuel, with reduced local air emissions compared to traditional marine fuels and the potential to integrate future alternative energy technologies.
Sea trial reports from earlier in the summer indicated that the 72,810 gross ton vessel underwent extensive technical and nautical testing in the Mediterranean, validating propulsion, maneuvering and hotel systems before the ship was handed over. The successful trials kept the project on schedule for a late July launch into commercial service.
According to technical briefings, EXPLORA III incorporates a range of energy efficiency measures, including optimized hull design and advanced waste and water treatment systems, aligning with MSC Group’s stated decarbonization strategy. The LNG ready platform is also presented in public material as a testbed for future solutions, including potential fuel cell applications that could be integrated on later ships in the series.
While LNG is not viewed as a final answer to maritime emissions, analysts note that its introduction on EXPLORA III signals the brand’s intent to position its newer hardware toward evolving environmental regulations, particularly in Northern Europe and other regions with strict emissions controls.
New Culinary Concepts and Expanded Suite Options Onboard
Alongside its technical upgrades, EXPLORA III introduces several new guest facing features that differentiate it from its predecessors. Trade coverage highlights three debut dining concepts on the ship: The Cellar, focused on fine wines and pairings; The Chef’s Table, an intimate culinary experience; and Shore Club on 11, an outdoor venue that adds an additional relaxed social and dining space at the top of the vessel.
Accommodation has also been expanded and refined. Information released by the brand points to a second Owner’s Residence on EXPLORA III, developed with architect Patricia Urquiola, alongside additional Ocean Penthouses and Ocean Residences. These top tier accommodations are positioned as residential style suites designed for longer stays and higher spending guests seeking more privacy and space.
Publicly available descriptions of the ship’s layout confirm that key features carried over from earlier vessels include an emphasis on all oceanfront suites with private terraces, multiple heated pools, generous outdoor deck space and a large wellness area that blends spa and fitness facilities. On EXPLORA III, the wellness proposition is presented as being further enhanced, complemented by the first onboard boutique from luxury brand Chopard.
These additions place EXPLORA III at the upper end of the luxury cruise market, where competition among newbuilds increasingly centers on differentiated dining, wellness and residential style accommodations instead of simply ship size.
Mediterranean Prelude Journey and Naming Plans
Following delivery, EXPLORA III is scheduled to operate a short introduction cruise marketed as a Mediterranean Prelude Journey. According to published itineraries, the five night sailing departs Genoa on 24 July and concludes in Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, on 29 July, with calls including Marseille, Saint Tropez, Villefranche sur Mer and Livorno.
The prelude itinerary is designed to give early guests and trade partners a first look at the ship before its official entry into regular service. Coverage in cruise media notes that tennis player Jannik Sinner, a brand ambassador for Explora Journeys, is expected to be onboard for part of the voyage, underlining the company’s strategy of aligning the brand with high profile lifestyle figures.
Current schedules show that EXPLORA III is due to be formally named in Barcelona on 1 August, in a ceremony timed around its early sailings in the western Mediterranean. The choice of Barcelona, where MSC Group is developing a major new terminal facility, reflects the importance of the western Mediterranean as a core deployment region for the early stages of the ship’s career.
After the naming event, EXPLORA III is planned to transition into its maiden journeys program, which will see the ship reposition and build toward a season involving Northern Europe, transatlantic crossings and later long range itineraries announced for future years.
New Capacity Supports Ambitious Itinerary Strategy
Explora Journeys has used the ramp up of EXPLORA III to refine a deployment philosophy centered on longer, non repetitive voyages and a mix of marquee ports and lesser visited destinations. Recently released schedules show that the ship’s inaugural season includes Northern Europe routes, an eclipse focused sailing and a scenic crossing linking Europe and North America, with onward plans for North Atlantic and Arctic gateway ports in subsequent years.
The additional capacity provided by EXPLORA III allows the brand to operate a broader geographic spread while its first two ships continue to cover the Mediterranean, Caribbean and other established regions. Trade publications have suggested that this multi ship strategy is intended to encourage repeat guests to move between vessels and seasons without encountering many duplicate itineraries.
Travel advisors following the launch note that the delivery of EXPLORA III strengthens the line’s position in the competitive luxury segment at a time when several rival brands are also bringing new tonnage into service. With a larger, more differentiated fleet, Explora Journeys is expected to leverage its parent group’s distribution reach while targeting travelers who might otherwise choose boutique hotels or land based resorts.
The delivery in Genoa therefore marks more than a single ship entering service. It is a key step in an ongoing effort to establish Explora Journeys as a sizable, design led and sustainability focused player in the global luxury travel market, with EXPLORA III as its new flagship platform.
